19世纪初，格林兄弟收集并整理了大量的民间故事，改编成了《儿童与家庭童话集》。此后，许多动画片、电影和文学作品都以《格林童话（英汉对照）/英语大书虫世界经典名译典藏书系》为素材进行了再创作，《儿童与家庭童话集》逐渐成了享誉世界的童话经典，人们便把格林兄弟收集的这些童话称为“格林童话”。《格林童话》来自民间，带有民间故事的许多优点：通俗、幽默、纯朴。这些故事大多叙事生动，寓意深刻。

它们有的歌颂忠诚、勤劳、勇敢、朴素等美德，有的对虚伪、自私、懒惰、邪恶等品质进行嘲讽和谴责。
